WHAT: TURN UP THE HEAT! CALLS, FAXES, EMAILS AND LETTERS ARE NEEDED TO STOP THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE FROM RESTRICTING ACCESS TO PRIVATE PROPERTY OWNED BY THE PILGRIM FAMILY IN ALASKA AND To STOP THEIR SWAT TEAM FROM FRIGHTENING THE TOWN.
The Pilgrim family and those folks living in the small rural town of McCarthy should not be restricted from using the trail, the only access to the Pilgrim family home. This access is a legal, valid RS2477 route owned by the State of Alaska. The Park Service has given no regulation or statute to support their illegal closure.
The Park Service has said it will need to send its version of A SWAT team (they call it a Special Events Team, or SET) up to protect BLM surveyors who will survey the boundary between the park and the family's private property. This is nonsense. The family has no objection to the survey itself. These are peaceful folks whose only crime is that they did not ask the Park service for permission to use a road that is not under NPS jurisdiction. Officials are trying to scare other residents of the small town of McCarthy, population 42, with this uncalled for action.
The family has tried to talk with NPS director Fran Mainella but Park Officials blocked the effort. They refuse to talk with local officials because they don't trust them. The family even has a letter from Governor Frank Murkowski stating that this is a legal, valid RS2477 road.
